World We Imagine Part 3 - Sustainable Education

Sustainable Education  Mission To help homeless youth and children from underserve communities to get better education and professional development. Purpose/Rationale Education is one of most important things that determine one’s career path and education inequality can consolidate the social stratification of different social classes. At Sustainable Education want to provide affordable and accessible education to homeless youth and children from underserve communities.   Uniqueness We wanted to collaborate with actual high education and technical schools to provide youth with real college programs. We firmly believe that having children get into actual college program can better help them blend in with other people in society and it could help their future development. Also, we want to create it as network similar to USC Trojan Network. Teenagers who successfully get into college could always welcome to come back for volunteer counseling to other children. We want thes...

World We Dare to Imagine part 1

World We Dare to Imagine part 1 I really like the perspective that The Blue Sweater has of how much actual action is more powerful and impactful than simply donating money to the needed. Also, doing something good to the society is about reaching more people (even people we don't know or haven't really met in the real life), connecting with more communities and spreading love to more places. The story of author seeing her blue sweater was worn by a little boy in Africa really inspired me to think of something more creatively that could be beneficial for the community. I started to brainstorm some ideas that could make some solid impacts to the communities (hopefully in the long term).  One idea that I think of is to start an enterprise that aim to help homeless or underserve communities to learn technical skills and to gain some aspects of education that could help them survive in the society. Most of the social stratification is due to the unequal allocation of social resour...

Random Post 2

Random Post 2 I started to binge starting a Netflix series Atypical a few days ago and turned out to love the show very much.  I finished the season 1 in two days.  I really like the protagonist - Sam, a high school child on autism spectrum. He is pretty "weird" - he likes Antartica so much since he knows everything about it and shares it to everyone. He has never dated a girl before and didn't know how to start. But Sam has started to figure out his way of finding a girlfriend. I like him so much because he was the type of person who lives in his own world, and is able to keep distant with other people. He is very honest and annoying sometimes (due to his honesty). During his way of finding girlfriend, he has made so many efforts like taking notes from conversations with dad, talking with his friend Zahid, etc. I remember one episode where Sam wanted to figure out whether he loves his girlfriend Paige. He created a checklist for Paige and Paige has successfully passed hi...

Book 2 Post 2

Book 2 Post 2  I am very interested in discussing the terminology - Healthism. I haven't realized that there is an academic term for the way of valuing health as the one superior thing in the society. Regardless of not knowing the term itself, I have had so many thoughts about Healthism.  Firstly, the thought of if you are "fat" or not healthy enough, you are not trying hard enough is invading people's life. In China, when you walk around the shopping mall, you would encounter sales from Fitness center coming around to greet you. What they would say to you is mainly - your body seems a bit unhealthy and needs some workout to catchup. You should try hard enough to improve your health. That selling moves are so common that many people are persuaded and started to subscribe for the services. The strategy itself is utilizing people's anxiety toward one's health and by selling their products and services to help alleviate people's stress. The thought also reve...

Book 2 Post 1

Book 2 Post 1 I decided to read Audrey Gordon's What We Don't Talk about When We Talk about Fat for the second book at the course. The reason behind is that I have been gaining some weights (so is my girlfriend) during the quarantine. We both felt pretty stressed out and unhappy about being fatter than before. I would love to learn more about the wrong mindset and how the society is bring to the group of people that might have fat issues. I would love to hear their thoughts. When I read the introduction, I already felt the stress by author's descriptions about how the world and people around the fat people group being ignorant and indifferent about the body by showing pity, concerns, and more negative emotions toward. People are scared of being fat and people are afraid of themselves not being able to lose weight eventually. These mindsets are inevitably putting pressures on the group. The depth of influence the society has given to the fat people group actually reminds me...

Decisions        When I was a teenager, my dad used to tell me that in real life it is more crucial to know how to make better decisions than simply working hard. However, I am always confused about the essence of making a good decision especially when facing a dilemma. In my opinion, there is no a "good" in making better decisions. Because no matter which side I pick, I would hurt the other side. I would harm others anyway.      Recently I turned down an offer from an investment bank that I interviewed. To be honest, I like the firm culture very much. Professionals there are very approachable and passionate. I enjoyed talking with them and learning more details about their day to day life. However, the firm is based in Seattle that requires a relocation there and I didn't want to leave San Jose. I felt bad when I declined the offer today. I felt like I let them down for not being able to work at the firm. I felt that they trusted me and saw my po...
