World We Dare to Imagine part 1

World We Dare to Imagine part 1

I really like the perspective that The Blue Sweater has of how much actual action is more powerful and impactful than simply donating money to the needed. Also, doing something good to the society is about reaching more people (even people we don't know or haven't really met in the real life), connecting with more communities and spreading love to more places. The story of author seeing her blue sweater was worn by a little boy in Africa really inspired me to think of something more creatively that could be beneficial for the community. I started to brainstorm some ideas that could make some solid impacts to the communities (hopefully in the long term).

One idea that I think of is to start an enterprise that aim to help homeless or underserve communities to learn technical skills and to gain some aspects of education that could help them survive in the society. Most of the social stratification is due to the unequal allocation of social resources. Children in the better communities have opportunities to get into better schools that could be truly beneficial for their career progression whereas children from underserve communities are not able to learn enough from schools non they could even finish the high school. Therefore, I would love to start a business that helps collect or "buy back" old clothes from households. Employees will come from homeless or people in the underserve communities. We would provide trainings and technical knowledge to help them get onboard. Once they start working, we will have special educational programs supporting them to learn more and get degrees potentially. Hopefully our company can collaborate with non-profit organization to bring unique education resources to our employees. This education resources and technical knowledge will serve as an incentive for employees to work harder and hopefully "make some money" that could reinvest in our business to improve our educational program. We hope to bring onboard more young people from the communities and selling used clothes can actually earn lots of money and help sustain environment. Overall, my goal is to have more people joining our company with the mindset of learning some knowledge afterwards. We bring cheaper, affordable, accessible education program to our employees so that even if they leave the company, they are able to go somewhere else to work.

  1. Hey Annie, great thoughts! I really like this idea. Are you thinking of something like Goodwill? I think it would work well, you could check out Goodwill's website or just the internet in general to see how it's run. I would make sure to address the question of where you will get the money to pay for the employees, but other than that it seems like it could definitely work!

  2. I think you've got a great idea here Annie. Like Nevin said there's some similarities to Goodwill, I think you could differentiate it by adding a piece about taking care of their mental health. A lot of homeless people unfortunately are experiencing so many mental health issues that even with the right opportunities and resources to work, they may not want to or be able to take advantage of those opportunities. I know that adds a large layer of complexity to your idea so feel free to take it or leave it but it's definitely something I'd consider!

  3. You've chosen an important cause to tackle. I wonder if it would be smart to start in LA considering how much of an issue homelessness is there. Maybe you could work under the umbrella of USC because I know that we have pre-existing community outreach programs and the school probably has enough capital to help this get off the ground.

  4. Homelessness has sure become a big problem in this country, and every time I pass by skid row/Venice Beach I thought about the same like what we can do to help them get onboard with opening bank accounts, getting jobs, etc. Our politicians have not done enough for this country and haven't even tried to put effort on closing the wealth gap. It is very thoughtful of you to offer them tools to make money instead of just offering them money.
